Which chimney to choose - ceramic or steel?

Choosing the right flue gas chimney from the heat source when building a new house or modernizing it should be carefully considered. Why? When choosing a chimney, the most important thing is the type of heating device you want to install in your home.

Take care of a safe chimney

Before buying the boiler, it is worth preparing the chimney. When replacing the heat source with a new one, failure to take care of a new chimney can cause numerous problems, and leaving the old one or choosing the wrong one can be a serious threat and even lead to a fire.

There are two types of chimneys to choose from - ceramic and steel, learn about their advantages and disadvantages. This comparison will definitely help you make the right choice.

Advantages and disadvantages of a ceramic chimney

The ceramic chimney can be made of stoneware or fireclay bricks, i.e. materials resistant to high temperatures.

The currently available ceramic chimneys consist of ready-made modules - prefabricated elements that are usually joined with mortar or acid-resistant putty resistant to high temperatures. These elements, in addition to the ceramic or stoneware insert, may have wool insulation and an external concrete casing. Such an insulated chimney can be placed outside and, depending on the house design, it can be a decorative element of the external facade.

Two-channel ceramic chimney

The ceramic chimney can also be available in the 2-in-1 system, i.e. it has a flue gas and air duct. This design will be the best solution for fireplaces or boilers installed in boiler rooms. The air duct will properly ventilate the boiler room, thanks to which you will not have to install additional grilles and air blowers in the room.

Steel chimney - is it the best?

Steel chimneys are made of steel of different thickness and type, depending on the heat source and exhaust gases passing through the pipes. They will work with virtually all used fuels and heating devices - this is the most universal solution.

Steel chimneys are light and easy to install. They are the best systems for retrofitting existing flue pipes, but also a very good choice for new buildings.

Which steel chimney to choose?

Chimneys made of steel can be installed both in shafts and outside the house. Then it is important to choose the right type of chimney - single-wall or insulated. Our Kominus systems are designed for a given type of heat source, which will ensure proper functioning of the system, as well as what is most important - safety and durability. It is also necessary to pay attention to the type of steel the chimney is made of and the dimensions. It is best to use professional help, e.g. a chimney sweep, who will know which chimney to choose for a given heating device.

Steel or ceramics - what to choose?

Both types of chimneys are a good solution for every home - both ceramics and steel are solid materials that will safely remove exhaust fumes from modern devices, are resistant to very high temperatures and condensate. When choosing a ceramic chimney, you have to take into account a higher price, high weight and more difficult assembly. Compared to ceramic blocks, the steel chimney is a lighter and cheaper structure, but at the same time durable, solid and resistant to very high temperatures. In addition, a steel chimney mounted outside will perfectly decorate the building and add a bit of an industrial, currently fashionable style.
